Project Overview

Try to discover what the community of students from the University of Warwick is most interested in, excited and worried about by analysing the posts from the widely popular Facebook page WarwickLove.

Objectives

  • Scrape posts from WarwickLove and analyse a variety of features (post time, length, number of comments and likes)
  • Apply Natural Language Processing techniques such as Sentiment Analysis or LDA to obtain a more in-depth analysis
  • Possible extension: compare the results to similar websites from other Universities

Role Responsibilities

Data Engineer
  • Perform web scraping to collect the posts from WarwickLove
  • Perform data cleaning to prepare the posts for the analysis
  • Support the analysis of WarwickLove posts
  • Contribute to the relevant sections of the final write-up
NLP Specialist
  • Apply Natural Language Processing techniques to extract more features from the raw data such as the sentiment of a post or its main topic
  • Contribute to the relevant sections of the final write-up
Data Analyst
  • Analyse the variety of features (post time, length, reactions, comments, sentiment, topic) to discover the characteristics of the most/least popular posts
  • Produce insightful and eye-catching data visualisations
  • Contribute to the relevant sections of the final write-up

Candidate Attributes

  • A passion for the project and, preferably, interdisciplinary data science in general
  • Self-starting attitude with willingness to research and problem-solve independently
  • Ability to work well in a team and clearly communicate your ideas
  • Strong time-management and organisational skills.
  • For all three roles previous project experience is a plus. Familiarity with Python or R is expected.
  • NLP Specialist should demonstrate a particular interest in Natural Language Processing methods for Data Science
