Project Overview

Where to draw the line between the Northern and Southern parts of the UK? In this project you will explore different socio-economic factors that characterise different parts of the country and try to come up with an objective boundary between the north and south.

Objectives

  • Understand the north-south divide in England by comparing economic, social and environmental factors
  • Use these divides to potentially come up with an objective boundary between the north and south
  • This might best be presented as an interactive web app (amazing related visualisation of Germany

Role Responsibilities

Social Science / Economics Expert
  • Guide the data collection process and propose the factors to be investigated
  • Support the data scientist with the domain expertise during the exploratory data analysis process
  • Contribute to the relevant sections of the final write-up
Data Scientist
  • Collect the data about the socio-economic and environmental factors in different parts of the UK
  • Perfofrm data cleaning and exploratory data analysis
  • Create the interactive visualisation as easily acessbile web-app
  • Contribute to the relevant sections of the final write-up

Candidate Attributes

  • A passion for the project and, preferably, interdisciplinary data science in general
  • Self-starting attitude with willingness to research and problem-solve independently
  • Ability to work well in a team and clearly communicate your ideas
  • Strong time-management and organisational skills.
  • For the role of the Data Scientist intermediate Python or R skills are desired
